El subcomandante Marcos, actualmente comandante insurgente, es el principal ideólogo, portavoz, comandante militar y uno de los líderes del grupo armado indígena mexicano Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional. El grupo armado hizo su debut público el 1 de enero de 1994, lanzando una ofensiva militar que intentó tomar siete capitales municipales en el estado sureño mexicano de Chiapas, exigiendo "democracia, libertad, tierra, paz y justicia" para las comunidades indígenas. Subcomandante Marcos, currently an insurgent commander, is the principal ideologue, spokesperson, military commander, and one of the leaders of the Mexican indigenous armed group the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN). The armed group made its public debut on January 1, 1994, launching a military offensive that attempted to seize seven municipal capitals in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, demanding "democracy, liberty, land, peace, and justice" for indigenous communities.
